Our Heritage

Guardians of the Valley

The people of this valley belong to the great Tani family, descendants, by oral tradition, of a single mythical ancestor.

THE TANI FAMILY

One Ancestor, Many People

The Galo, Adi, Apatani, Tagin and Nyishi all belong to the great Tani family. Through oral tradition and folklore they trace their descent to a single mythical ancestor, Abo Tani.

In the beginning, the universe was created by the supreme being Jingbu Pabu Abu. From the union of the Earth and the Sky, Abo Tani emerged as the first human, and the various tribes each descend from his children.

CULTURE & SOCIETY

Governed by the Kebang

Tani society is traditionally democratic. Community life is guided by village councils known as the Kebang, which settle disputes and steer collective decisions, less by decree than by the consensus of elders and households.
